Recent news about the “cognitive costs” of using artificial intelligence, highlighted in a study by Kosmyna et al., at MIT, has generated significant debate. Link: https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.08872
Researchers warn that over-reliance on tools like ChatGPT could diminish critical thinking skills affect our memory and reduce brain activity associated with writing.
In Humanities, AI can be a powerful ally. This tool allows us to analyze large volumes of text, visualize data, digitize and virtualize cultural heritage, summarize texts to select what to read, among other functions.
A well-trained AI can also generate states of arts, but interpretation and critical thinking remain a purely human mission.
The answer to the dilemma about the use of AI is clear: It is a tool, not a crutch. Think of it this way: using a calculator does not relieve you of the need to know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
In conclusion, we do not have to stop using AI, but we should make use of it as a tool. If we use it as a support in conjunction with our own effort, we can enhance our skills instead of letting them atrophy.

Please feel free to give us your opinion. Do you think AI will make us more or less intelligent in the long run? Do you use AI correctly as a tool?
