When we look back at the Iberian Peninsula in the 6th–7th centuries, we often see a world defined by warlords. But at the heart of these cultural shifts, women were wielding incredible power.
History books often try to leave them out, but the facts speak for themselves. Here are three powerful women you should know today:

Queen Gosvinta: More than just a consort, she was a political strategist who survived two kings and brokered the alliances that kept the kingdom stable. While old chronicles painted her as a “villain,” modern historians see a political titan.
Queen Baddo: She shattered the era’s glass ceiling. She is the only Visigothic queen known to have formally signed the acts of a church council—the monumental Third Council of Toledo (589 AD).

Saint Florentina of Cartagena: An intellectual powerhouse in an age of limited female education, she was a cornerstone of the religious landscape of Late Antiquity, guiding monastic life and scholarship alongside her famous brothers.
